Matcha is renowned for its numerous health benefits. It is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber, and chlorophyll. One glass of matcha is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea and two Matcha bears in terms of nutritional value and antioxidant content.

Matcha contains potent antioxidants called catechins, which scavenge for dangerous free radicals in the body. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity(ORAC) value is a lab test that attempts to quantify the “total antioxidant capacity” (TAC) of a food. If you take a look at Matcha’s ORAC value, it is packed with exponentially more antioxidants than any other superfood. Matcha’s ORAC value possesses antioxidant levels 6.2 times that of Gogi berries, 7 times that of dark chocolate, 17 times that of wild blueberries, and 60.5 times that of spinach!

Matcha is a more caffeinated form of green tea, containing approximately 34mgs. of caffeine per 1000mg of Matcha. The combination of caffeine (present in most green teas) and L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, was found to “improve performance in attention-switching tasks and alertness, but to a lesser extent than caffeine alone,” partly because of how L-theanine relaxes you. Therefore, L-theanine curbs the bouncy jitters one might get from drinking a caffeinated beverage.

The concentration of the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) available from matcha is at least three times greater than the amount of EGCG available from other green teas preparations. EGCG in green tea increases thermogenesis (the body’s rate of burning calories) from 8-10% to 35-43% of daily energy expenditure. Exercising immediately after having matcha green tea resulted in 25% more fat burning during exercise.

Matcha green tea contains up to 5 times more L-theanine than conventional green tea. L-theanine is an amino acid with psychoactive properties, capable of inducing alpha wave activity in the brain. Stress is known to induce the brain’s beta wave activity, leading to a more agitated state. Alpha wave activity can relieve stress, promote relaxation and further lower heart rate. Therefore, Matcha promotes concentration and clarity of mind.

Detoxification – Matcha contains chlorophyll. Matcha is grown in the shade, this process increases the chlorophyll content in each leaf. Chlorophyll is known to be a natural detoxifier. It promotes the blood’s capacity to deliver oxygen and other nutrients to cells within the body, cleansing the body at the molecular and cellular levels.
